The new visualisations for the updated version of this database are currently under construction. When they are finished they will be available to explore on this page. In the meantime, please visit our old website for the existing version of the Water Technologies Database.

About the database

This database of papyrological evidence was compiled by Dr Myrto Malouta as part of her work as Research Assistant for OXREP between 2005 and 2008. It shows more than 600 references to water-lifting devices and irrigation facilities from Egypt, with an emphasis on the Oxyrhynchite Nome, dating between 300 BC and AD 700. It can be used as an accompaniment to M. Malouta and A.I. Wilson (2013), 'Mechanical irrigation: water-lifting devices in the archaeological evidence and in the Egyptian papyri', in: A.K. Bowman and A.I. Wilson (eds), The Roman Agricultural Economy: Organization, Investment, and Production (Oxford Studies on the Roman Economy). Oxford, OUP, 273–305.
